The former Member of Parliament for Gomoa East Constituency in the Central Region, Mr Kojo Asemanyi has bailed out 35 patients detained at the Christian Hope Hospital at Gomoa Fetteh after their inability to pay their medical bills.
The patients include new mothers who delivered through cesarean section after complications during labor and other patients who were diagnosed by different kinds of diseases.
The MP upon hearing the plight of the patients moved there with his entourage to make a total payment of GH¢ 25,000 to settle the medical bills.
The practice of detaining people in the hospital for the non-payment of medical bills is common in secondary and tertiary healthcare facilities in Ghana,” he said.
Speaking in an interview with DAILY Analyst, after the presentation of GH¢ 25, 000 to settle the medical bills, Mr Asemanyi noted that it is his topmost priority to support the poor.
He used the opportunity to appeal to Ghanaians who are blessed with money to support the needy patients in various hospitals across the country.
Scores of patients who have been released from detention in the hospital after the former MP paid their bills expressed gratitude to the former Gomoa east legislator.
For his part, the General Manager of the Christian Hope Hospital, Dr. Fred Asare disclosed that a total of thirty – five patients treated and discharged at the Hope Christian Hospital who could not pay their medical bills were detained.
“As a policy in this Hospital, we save lives before we look at money so even if you don’t have money we will take care of you. so these patients requested for deferred payment which some have paid but the majority have not which is quite problematic,” Dr. Fred Asare noted.
